Wedding Guest Dresses

Hello, everyone!

We’ve all been there: We’ve all been invited to a wedding and have no idea what to wear. How formal is the wedding? Is it outside or inside? Should I wear a long dress or a short dress? And what about footwear? So many choices!

I’m heading to a wedding in August and am trying to figure out what to wear. I’m determined to decide on my outfit well in advance so I can avoid any frantic, last-minute shopping. The wedding I’m going to is in upstate New York in August, and it’s outside. The wedding has a sort of barn chic vibe, so something super formal would be out of place.

I’ve narrowed down my options to something like the dresses below. As you can see, I’ve decided on a fit-and-flare silhouette because that works best for my shape, but I can’t decide if I want to go with a floral pattern or lace. My thoughts about each one are below, but what do you think? Which one do you like best?

J. Crew Factory Sateen V-neck Dress in Floral

I love the floral print of this dress, and the price is fantastic ($65). The issues I have with this option are 1) the v-neck looks a bit low, and one of the reviews mentions this as an issue and 2) the dress is on clearance, so I couldn’t return or exchange it if it doesn’t fit. I love online shopping, but I tend to stick with sites/stores that have a good return policy. J.Crew Factory’s return policy on regular items is fine, but I’m not a fan of their policy for clearance items. I’d hate to purchase this and then be stuck with it even if it doesn’t fit.

Modcloth Blossoming with Beauty Dress

I love the cherry blossom print on this one, and it would be so much fun to pair this dress with pink accessories. The price is also great for this dress ($70), but my question is if this dress is too much white. I asked the bride what she thinks, and she didn’t seem to mind that it’s mostly white, so maybe I’m making something out of nothing here.

Modcloth Exquisite Elegance Dress in Navy

This dress is so pretty! I love the lace on the bodice and the skirt, but this dress is pricier than the two above ($130), and there is the potential issue of it also being largely a white dress. Also, there isn’t any fabric behind the lace across the shoulders, which would mean that I’d probably have to wear a strapless bra, which I hate wearing. Seriously. So uncomfortable.

Modcloth Vivaciously Verdant Dress

This dress is the most expensive of the bunch ($180 – yikes!!), so that might rule this one out for that reason if nothing else. I like the lace, and I’ve been itching to buy a green dress lately for some reason. I do wonder if something like this is a bit too bridesmaid-y.

  1. My vote is for number 1 or 2! Personally, the first one is my favorite, but like you mentioned, it might be a little low cut. You could always wear a tank underneath. Good luck!
